What's a Girl to Do?

A little bit about the trials and tribulations of being a 30 something single woman.

Moving

Well, I've moved to the wonderful state of Texas (hear the sarcasm?). I think this has been the biggest mistake of my life, but I'm here and half to stay for a little while at least, if for no other reason than i can't afford to move back to KC. I'm just not sure if i'll make it a year here. i feel like this place is killing me. The town is so one dimensional and cookie-cutter. People here don't embrace their individuality. In fact, the majority define themselves by the university in town. It is crazy here.

Thoughts on Barbie

Barbie has always fascinated me. As a young girl I loved playing with my Barbies. I would have different bodies dressed in different clothes and then just switch the heads around instead of going through the hassle of changing their clothes. As an adult I still love to peruse the Barbie aisle at toy stores just to see what crazy new things Barbie is up to.

About 10 years ago I made an observation that the makers of Barbie underestimate the intelligence of children. It was right after the release of Jurassic Park (ok, so maybe it was more than 10 years ago) and I was looking at the different 'job' Barbies. I came across "Pet Doctor Barbie". This seemed pretty typical of her careers up to that point. Then, right next to the pet doctor was "Paleontologist Barbie" complete with her pink canteen and hiking boots. Why does Matel think that kids would know what a Paleontologist was but not a veterinarian? That just struck me as funny.

More recently (as in last week) I was walking through the toy area in Target and discovered that Barbie is the crazy cat lady! She falls into that definition very easily since, A) she isn't married and B) she has more than two cats. I came to that 3+ cat conclusion since the Barbie bedroom set comes with a cat, the Barbie futon living room comes with a cat, and the Barbie fancy bathroom comes with another cat! It gave me hope that someone as successful and beautiful as Barbie still can't find a good man. Although that might be because her only choice is Ken, who always seemed to be a beach bum.

Really?

So, I've been dating Smokey for about 3 weeks and he's very nice but he also has some really big drawbacks. The main one is being a chain smoker. I've dated smokers in the past and it was alright and not too bad, but having to smoke one (or more) cigarette at least every hour is a bit excessive in my opinion. The fact that every time he kisses me I can smell the smoke on his breath is just terrible. I've hinted a couple of times (trying to be polite) that I've got a spare toothbrush he can have, but that seems to be too subtle. It is also too subtle a hint for the morning breath thing. I feel like such a bitch since I wouldn't kiss him this morning (his b-day) and finally just blurted out that it was "the whole morning breath thing". Real subtle on my part. But I did make a point of telling him last night about the spare toothbrush (pretty and still in it's wrapper). The thought of kissing someone with smoker breath on top of morning breath who didn't brush their teeth before going to bed is just yucky. Especially since I had been up, was dressed and had eaten and brushed my teeth already. I would have felt it all morning.

New Boy

Well, I seem to have started dating a new man.

*pause to do dance of joy in the living room*

This guy is such a surprise to me. I actually met him in a bar. Ironic since I've spent the better part of the last year making a concerted effort to meet men anywhere except a bar. He is younger than I am by about 6.5 years. I must admit that gave me a few moments of concern. I've never thought I'd be interested in dating someone that is only 3 years older than my nephew, but he doesn't seem to have a problem with it so I'm not going to make it an issue.

Most of the new things I learn about him please and surprise me. Some of his traits are things that I liked about Superman, but I'm starting to think that those are traits I'm attracted to in general. It is pretty hard not to compare the two, but so far B is coming out on top. Plus he has traits that I just haven't found in a man in a long time. B's working and going to school and (surprise) he actually reads a lot. We've had conversations about books! It has been such a long time since I dated a guy who read. I know that seems a little silly but it's pretty important to me, especially since I always have a book going.

Did I mention that he is cute beyond belief?? And I just melt when he caresses my neck or face.

Irony

It is terribly ironic that after being on eHarmony and/or Match.com off and on for just on one year I met a guy in a bar two weeks ago and he's great! I have more in common with him than with any of the other guys I've met in that year. I'm starting to feel like I've wasted quite a bit of money.

My weekend

My weekend was spent pretty much cleaning, cleaning, cleaning! It's a really good thing my family only comes once or twice a year or I'd never get anything done but housework. I don't know why I feel the need to make my house spotless for my parents - unless it is a way of showing up my sisters! There is nothing better than having my mom tell me that my house is the least cluttered of all her kids. Finally, I'm better than them at something! You'd think that as I get older the whole sibling rivalry thing would fade away, but oh no, not with me or my family.

Stupid Boys

I've decided that guys are just stupid and if they aren't they manage to come up with some pretty stupid things to say. My personal favorite lately is, "your a great/sweet/cool/sexy girl, any guy would be lucky to date you." My problem with that line is that they usually say it as they are telling me why they can't date me. I think that is the new "I need space" or "it's not you it's me." In anycase, it is ridiculous. I find it even more annoying since most of the guys I've dated lately are ones I've met online. These guys are supposedly looking for someone to have a relationship with, but even with all my good points they can't date me. I'd much rather they just said the blunt truth, whatever that is. I can deal with them saying that there is no chemistry, my laugh annoys them, they are still hung up on their ex, or whatever the real reason is. Why do men (and women) feel that it is better to use some silly line to break up with or stop seeing someone than to just tell the truth? How bad would it be if I said to Cute Boy that his constant silliness is just a little annoying? I guess that might be a little harsh, but it is still true. I think I could get away with just saying that I don't think we really mesh well and then if he were to push the issue I'd tell him he's too silly.
